Sustainability in Security: Beyond the Buzzword

Every few years, a word gets adopted so widely it stops meaning anything. “Sustainability” is in that club now. You see it on datasheets, in tender responses, on the side of cardboard boxes that were not designed to be recycled. In the security industry, it has become the green leaf logo that assures procurement without asking anything of engineering.

That is a problem, because the physical security stack (the cameras, readers, controllers, servers and cabling) we install and maintain is one of the longer-lived, more power-hungry bits of a building’s infrastructure. If we treat sustainability as a marketing line, we miss the places where it matters and where it can save real money, real energy and real carbon.

This post is about the version of sustainability that holds up under scrutiny. The kind you can defend in a boardroom, on a site walk, or in a design review.

What sustainability means in our world

In physical security, “sustainable” almost never means what it means in, say, fashion. There is no organic CCTV. The honest definition is built from four pillars, and most of them overlap with things our clients already care about:

1.Environmental — energy use of always-on systems, e-waste from short-lifecycle hardware, the carbon cost of service visits.

2.Operational — systems that keep working for ten years, not three, with firmware updates instead of forklift upgrades.

3.Economic — total cost of ownership that holds up over a decade, not a flashy capex that doubles the opex later.

4.Human — trained engineers who stay in the industry, because a sustainable system run by an exhausted, undertrained team is not actually sustainable.

If a vendor can only talk about one of these (usually the environmental one, and usually in vague terms) they are doing the buzzword version.

The hardware lifecycle is where most of the carbon hides.

The unpleasant truth is that the manufacturing footprint of a camera, an access controller or a biometric reader dwarfs the energy it uses over its lifetime. So, the single biggest sustainability lever we have is how long that hardware stays in service.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Spec for the long game. A reader with the latest technology that takes firmware updates for eight years can be a longer-lasting purchase than a cheaper unit that is unsupported in three, even if the latter scores better on a procurement spreadsheet.
  • Modular architecture. When the credential tech changes (and it will), can you swap the reader head without re-cabling the door? If not, every credential refresh becomes a small e-waste event.
  • Right-sized, not over-spec’d. A 12 MP camera covering a car park is a sustainability problem. It draws more power, requires more storage, generates more heat, and is usually replaced sooner. The eco-friendly choice is the camera that does the job at the lowest sensible resolution and frame rate.

This is the part where integrators earn their fee, or don’t. A good spec is a sustainability document.

Energy: the visible win, but rarely the biggest one

It is easy to talk about PoE efficiency and low-power modes, and we should as a modern access controller sipping under 5 W versus a legacy unit at 25 W can add up across a campus. But the bigger energy story in security is usually operations, not devices.

  • False alarms. Every false alarm response is a truck roll. A well-tuned analytics pipeline that cuts false alarms by even a third can be one of the largest carbon interventions an estates team can make, and it may pay for itself in year one.
  • Remote diagnostics. If your integrator can resolve 60% of issues from a desk (and Arana does) the rest of the fleet gets a smaller service footprint, fewer vans, fewer site visits.
  • Storage strategy. A 30-day retention policy that is enforced, with motion-based recording where appropriate, can cut storage power by 40–60%. That is a meaningful load on a 24/7 operation.

None of this shows up on a brochure. All of it shows up on a meter. The workforce question nobody puts on a slide.

Our industry has a quiet workforce crisis. Experienced engineers are retiring, the apprenticeship pipeline is thin, and the knowledge to commission, integrate and repair these systems properly is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. A vendor that sells you a sophisticated solution and then cannot staff the support contract may be selling you an e-waste problem in five years.

This is the human pillar, and it is the one we are most willing to skip past. At Arana, it shows up as a deliberate investment in training, in keeping senior engineers in post rather than offshoring expertise, and in building handover documentation that the next team can read.

How to tell greenwashing from the real thing

A short checklist, useful for any tender or vendor review:

  • Ask for the lifecycle number. “How long is this device supported, in writing, with what firmware cadence?” If the answer is fuzzy, the sustainability claim is likely fuzzy too.
  • Look at the service model. How many issues are resolved remotely? What is the mean time between site visits? Real sustainability is visible in the operational data.
  • Audit the spec. Are cameras right sized, or is everything at the maximum? Is the storage tiered? Are controllers on PoE+ or pulling dedicated mains?
  • Check the people. Who will be on the account in year five? What does the engineer’s career look like at this vendor?

If a vendor can answer all five honestly, the green leaf on the brochure is probably deserved.
